What am I looking for? What interests me? I need to seek out and connect those disparate paths of my mind. I thought that doing the work I do now would join it all in one, big, harmonious jumble. Instead I feel alternately stressed or bored. There is no mental stimulation from applying accounting rules. There is the daily fatigue of simply doing mental work, but it is not invigorating nor challenging in the least.
A graduate degree? For what? Why? To benefit whom? An end in and of itself, perhaps, instead of a means to an end. I am meant for better and bigger things than simply, accountant. But all of the paths seem wrong. Artist? No... Professor? No.... Arts Manager? Not that either.....
The first step is to define the problem; then the solution will come henceforth.

A recipe for Caffe Freddo
(to cool you down and pep you up)
1. Make about 3 oz of strong coffee per serving. I like to use instant espresso or my percolator. A french press is acceptable, and drip coffee is last resort.
2. Add a good heaping amount of sugar (brown or white) to the coffee and stir to melt. It's best to make sweeter than you want if you're going to dilute the mixture with cream or melting ice.
3. Add a dash of almond extract.
4. Fill a cocktail shaker full of ice and pour the concoction in. Shake till cool.
5. Strain into a glass filled with ice and if you prefer, top it off with some cream.
6. Add straw and yum!

Change of Plans
The response for the site was lackluster so I decided to take things in a different direction. It's time that I started showcasing my own work that I've done over the past few years and will be heading in a more professional, less bloggy direction. So head over to desire machines for my work as it becomes complete/available.
From a more personal standpoint, you can follow me at twitter under @bridgetdriessen.
Goodbye, and goodnight!

be a contributor to :desire machines:
As I mentioned below, I'm in the process of building an online magazine, desire machines (header: assimilating sensuality), that caters exactly to my tastes --- and I'm looking for contributors!
I want the site to be a showcase for a variety of media - video, audio, visual art, fashion, design, art history, literary, interesting news....think of it as a combination of boing boing/fashion mags/wunderkammer/etc.
What I'm looking for from you is interest in contributing in any way that you think would be cool - interviews with interesting people, reviews of shows/exhibitions, cool things coming up in your area, showcases of artists/video/audio, upcoming events, neat things on ebay....
I want the content to fall somewhere between "more comprehensive than a blog" and "less lengthy than a vanity fair piece" and does not have to run on the time frame of a blog or a monthly ---- almost all of the details are up in the air right now.
If you are interested in contributing, let me know!
Similarly, if you know anyone that would be a good fit, please pass on the request.
I'm not going to be using Wordpress, but to see how I am trying out some of the style - check out my test page HERE
You can also check out the test calendar I'm working with for events and shows that fit the aesthetic HERE.
One final note - I don't want this to be tied to Chicago so if you're not local or if you're thinking of moving, you can still be a part of this.
Thanks all, I appreciate it!

Hello, World!
So as it happens, I made some plans for some things and I only accomplished them halfway (or you could say, 1/25 of the way.)
The good news is that I've always got a zillion plans in the works and I DO implement them bit by bit.
The first thing is, I'm working on an online magazine, desire machines, which I hope to turn into an elegant, hard-edged, sexy amalgamation of the type of subjects that I have touched on here. At this point I'm trying to decide on the best medium for delivery - I've tested a couple of hosting sites and platforms and am still working on the kinks. Eventually, I'll be putting out a request for contributors. In the meantime, I've linked the calendar for DM on the left, which will showcase events, music, movies, fashion shows, etc.
Second, I'm slowly working on pulling together my limited portfolio - styling, drawing, painting, photography, graphic design....you know! That's over at bridgetdriessen and is also very much in the initial stages. In the meantime, one of the most representative items of mine is this video
I made for Justin McGrath's ambient project a while back. It even got "liked" by vimeo director Blake Whitman and is part of the channel Videos That Don't Suck! . I've got some more plans for video collaborations on the way, so just sit tight and eventually you'll be rewarded :-)
Finally, I've been to some shows, I've been getting hooked on BSG, I've been working on some design for an iPhone app (more on that later), I've been going to the gym on a semi-frequent basis, I've been taking cross-midwestern trips, I've daydreamed about cars and cruises and new cities, I've beaten Fallout 3, I've been cooking up a storm, I've stumbled upon some fashion-related successes, I've been investing, I've been saving money, I've been trying to stay true to myself and feel good!!

Fashion Month has officially hit!
I'm trying to see how I can share my style.com lookbook as I go over the collections but it looks like for now I'm gonna have to save there first, then post here. A bunch of shows hit today but to keep some semblance of organization I'm gonna start with the shows that already hit in the past week or so: Acne, Peter Som, Monique Lhuillier, Rachel Roy, Lyn Devon, Jenni Kayne & TSE.
Of course there are so many smaller labels that are probably showing that won't have a link on style.com. If I get a chance, I'm going to cross check against Nylon & Dazed Digital as the collections occur.
Trudging through so many labels it sometimes feels like they all blend together in your mind. It's important to recognize the millions of markets that an item as broad as "clothing" is attempting to reach. In that vein, when I do the daily posts, I'd like to try grouping them by niche market, if that's possible. For the designers mentioned about, I'd put Acne & Jenni Kayne together; then Peter Som, Rachel Roy and Lyn Devon; TSE and Lhuillier in a category each their own.
Look to the next post, I'll show you!

Another "Need" of Mine

As I've said before, I'm not a professional photographer and have never taken any classes beyond the basics, but I do really love doing it. Last year I got a Nikon D60. It's basically an entry level DSLR, but it serves my skill level well, which is that beyond amateur and before professional. You could say my general method is to become an armchair expert on as many things as I can think of, but not to commit too much to any one thing for fear of falling out of the loop on all the others.
ANYWAY, the other day I had to star the lens pictured above in Google Reader, from a Gizmodo post. It's a prime lens with a 1.8 aperture and fits really well with the setup I have right now. It would actually be amazing for what I am trying to do - #1 being becoming a better photographer and #2 being getting a wider aperture than my current largest - 3.5. If I'm remembering my photo skillz correctly, (don't make a fool of yourself!) This will really help out with the low light problems that I was talking about a couple of posts ago. Of course, along with that comes a really narrow depth of field, and no zoom, but those are challenges for me to learn about and get past, anyway :-)
It runs a mere $200 and starts shipping in March - Amazon Prime, you know my number!
Chicago Fashion Rundown
The City of Chicago is really working overtime to jump start a culture of creativity in Fashion.
Normally, when I think of the scene here in town, I don't think of an industry so much as a consumption niche. Most of the fashion events in town are focused more around the actual act of shopping (Shecky's Girls Night Out, Shop Chicago, Trunk Shows, etc.). It could be because I'm not in the actual industry that I'm not seeing the PR for other types of events, but even so, the whole scene kind of flies under the radar.
I missed the first event that I got an invite for, the rotation of Chicago Fashion Incubator, a partnership with Macy's that supports emerging designers-in-residence over on State Street. I've been looking for some info on the new 2009 designers but can't find anything. I'd love to do a write-up, so if you know, please drop me a line!
I've got info for a few more events that sound really exciting coming up soon - more to come.
Oh, to top it all off, the city's started a twitter account - go follow them so you can keep up, too!

SO! Fashion week in New York for A/W 09/10 starts in a couple of days, and I'm really excited, as always. I got an invite to the Pleasure Principle/Seven New York video presentation + after party and sadly I'll not be there as, ding ding, I'm not gonna be in NY! I have a Pleasure Principle dress and I love the way it drapes. Some people might not like the look, but I love feeling like I could step out of Dune. Or maybe my real goal is to have the visual aesthetics in my life mirror a David Lynch film....If you're in town for fashion week, consider checking this party out!
